MXit on PC with the phone emulator is still handy though – as you get to see the real original MXit version for your mobile on your PC! And you can understand what it would feel like to have it on your phone!

But for those who don’t have a phone – the new official MXit PC will provide you the fun you are looking for!

A new version (5.4.1) of the MXit mobile client has been released.

This is a bugfix release that does not add new functionality.

The following bugs have been fixed:

1. File send (upload) speed has been improved significantly.
2. Minimum PIN length when registering has been changed to 7 digits.
3. The Alerts profiles have been extended so that markup and vibes can be enabled / disable on a per profile case. This would allow people to protect themselves from getting spammed with vibes in e.g. chatrooms by for example putting all the chatrooms in a group, disabling vibes and markup for a specific profile (e.g. silent), and assigning that profile to the group
4. Popup menu now displays items correctly in all cases (previously it was sometimes incorrectly scrolled down when shown for the first time)
5. Indonesian language support has been added.
6. The default progress icon has been updated a bit (has MXit text inside)
7. Sony Ericsson K700 and Motorola V360, V3 and V3i versions have been updated so that they use less memory. The default skin that is used for those version has also been simplified.
8. Fixed the issue with custom emoticon packs going missing (when deleting pack and adding new one)
9. Voice recorder for Nokia 6233 (and other Series 40 3rd Ed SP1 & SP2 phones now works correctly)
10. Samsung U700: Pressing left arrow in Name field of save messages screen does not freeze app anymore.
11. Skins with names that are longer than 23 characters can now be activated (again).
12. Camera is now disabled for Nokia E60 (since E60 does not have camera support)
13. Stylus support is now enabled for all v5.4 handsets
14. Save messages (to gallery) feature has been improved: big messages are now saved correctly and color markup (#RRGGBB) is not saved unnecessarily anymore.

Version 5.4 Features

1. Select Contact For Content

From Tradepost or Gallery you can now select content e.g. wallpapers, mood cards, etc., which can be sent directly to your contacts. So easy or what!

2. Inline Images

Allows small thumbnail images to appear as part of the text conversations.

3. Audio Recording

The ability to record audio snippets up to 60 seconds, that can be sent as files to your contacts. Now we’re talking!

4. Emoticon Packs

This feature allows for the downloading and transfer of emoticon packs which can be sent to your MXit friends. Share the love!

5. MXit Vibes

You know have the ability to send vibes to your contacts which will prompt their mobile phone to vibrate. Rad or what! Vibes can be played even if their message alert vibration is switched off. However, the disable vibe prompt, allows you to toggle between switching your vibes off and on.

6. Scroll To Unread Message

For your convenience, when opening a contact screen, this feature will ensure that the conversation scrolls to the first unread message.

7. Transfer Files In The Background

Sending and receiving skinz, cards, images and audio files is now done in the background by displaying a progress bar within the conversation screen itself.

8. Emoticon Screen Heading

Added a heading for the emoticon screen that has a one word describing your emoticon image i.e. Excited, Happy, etc.

9. Invite Improvements

When a MXit user adds a contact, you can now include an invitation message, to be viewed by the Mxiteer receiving the invite.

10. Alert Profiles

Updated the alert system so that each set of alerts is grouped in a profile, either as General, Meeting or Silent. A profile can then be assigned to apply to an entire group, or to a single contact. You can also select a custom sound, from the mobile phones memory or file system to be used as an alert – if your mobile supports file access.

11. MXit Markup (Format text)

Now you can format your text message with bold, underline, italics and creating your own selectable link. Makes it so much easier to get your point across.

12. Scalable Vector Graphics File Support

Added support to play scalable vector graphics. What is SVG? It’s an XML specification and file format for describing two-dimensional vector graphics.

14. Phone support for V5.4

Due to the large number of features that have been added for this release, support has been dropped for a number of older and low end mobile phones.

Therefore V5.4 will only be supported on the following handsets:

What’s new in V5.3?

• MultiMX (pronounced Multi Mix) – is MXit’s new group chatroom!
  So you can invite your contacts to join you in a private Group Chat for free!

Some info on MultiMX

1. The room is temporary (gets deleted after you logout)
2. Can only invite people from your contact list (roster) that are online.
3. Only the creator of the room can invite people to join.

All phones can join in a MultiMx chat session! (but just a few can’t create/invite)

Group broadcast (multi send)

This has been free since MXit V5.2.
In other words, are you tired of typing the same thing to all your contacts? MXit allows you to send the same message to everyone in a “group” in MXit. (Menu -> Contacts -> Add/Move to group)

Here’s what groups look like in MXit – groups really help to organize your contacts:
(TIP: Your most popular/spoken to contact can be left groupless so that it’s always on top)

So you choose the group name and press Group-Broadcast Write and it will send the message to up to 10 contacts in that group!

MultiMX simplified

Basically if you want to chat to more than one of your contacts/friends at a time and you can all talk together at the same time and see what everyone is saying (chat room like), MultiMX will help!
It is aimed at being a quick, spur of the moment conversation between a couple of people.

- If you log out or deletes the contact, that counts as leaving the MultiMx.
- Google Talk or MSN Messenger contacts cannot be part of a MultiMx yet, this feature will still be added.

Also, check out “Tradepost” on MXit for more chat rooms where you can chat to more than just your friends list! Tradepost chat rooms work on any phone and you can invite anyone to join your chats!

MXit V 5.3 will also have some new bug fixes!

Why get Freestyler subscription on MXit?
You can save, send and receive your messages, greetings cards and pictures at no additional cost (beyond operator data costs).

On Thursday, August 16 2007 it will be available to Freestylers first to test out!

Major Features

• International languages – support for more alphabets/characters (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and German)

V5.2 is just a minor’ish update.

Minor Fixes/Additions

• Smooth Scrolling – Hold in up and down, no need to press up/down repeatedly.
• Set your autoaway time. ( 1,2,5,10, or 20 minutes)
• Under settings – login: You can change the connection type: auto/http/socket: half duplex/socket: full-duplex. This is for phones that might have problems connecting.
• A “3 soft button mode” – if you want to use a third shortcut button at the MXit bottom bar. (“Options” and “Back” are “soft keys” when you are talking to a contact.) Having three will give you “Write” as a softkey, for quicker access. As well as other options on other screens in MXit.
• Presence State & Mood In Conversation Screen
• Connectivity Improved
• Max Message Size Changed to 1000 bytes/characters
• Improvements for some phones:

i-Mate / HTC phones do not have much extra java APIs (no file access, no sending of SMS, no access to the camera from within Java), so the extra feature will be the ability to download skins.

I managed to find the MXit V5.2 beta before it was released, but I’m not a person to break trust, so don’t even ask You will get it soon!

Official changelist

1. Encryption
An option is now available to encrypt user to user messages using 128 AES.
The encryption is performed using a shared password.
When logging in the password is also encrypted.
A further encryption option allows services to communicate with a client using encrypted communication.

2. Meet Your Gallery
V5.2 allows ALL users to make use of the Gallery. (Previously exclusive to Freestylers)
Save conversations, files, Skinz and more to your personal Gallery.

25 items at a max size of 150kb.

3. Play Audio Files
Adds the ability to play audio files from within MXit. Note that this feature is not available to all handsets.
The following file types will be supported for each supported phone category
(The Used column is the percentage of version 5 users that makes use of that particular category)

4. Smooth Scrolling
The ability to scroll through the contacts list and chat screen by holding in an arrow key (instead of having to press it repeatedly).

5. Broadcast (Group Messaging)
V5.2 allows you to broadcast a message to 10 contacts in a Group for FREE. (Previously exclusive to Freestylers)
Multimedia file types are charged at 15 Moola per broadcast.

6. Set Auto Away Timer
The interval that must elapse before the user’s presence is set to away automatically can now be configured in Menu -> Settings -> Presence.

7. Configure Softbutton Mode
The user can now configure whether a middle softbutton action should be available where applicable (default for Nokia handsets).

8. Presence State & Mood In Conversation Screen
Modify the presence state and mood indicators that are shown in the heading bar of the conversation screen to refer to that contact instead of to the user itself.
This will make it easier to see if the mood or presence state of a contact changed, while talking to him/her.

9. Multiple Language Support
Added support for multiple languages. The choice of language is made during the download process.

10. Connectivity Improved
If a connection cannot be made using sockets, the client will fall back to HTTP mode.
Furthermore an option has been added so that the user can select at login time which network connection he would like to use (half-duplex socket, full-duplex socket or HTTP)

11. Max Message Size Changed
The maximum size of a message that can be sent has been reduced to 1000 bytes (from 2048) to save memory.

Bugs fixed:
1. Samsung D900 / E250: Fixed local file system access problems.
2. Samsung D900, Motorola V3X: Fixed file sending.
3. Motorola V3x: Fixed photo capture
4. Nokia S60: Phone camera is now available while MXit is running in the background.
5. Samsung E250: Skins, Local file access now supported.
6. HTC: Skinz now supported
7. Nokia S60 2nd Ed FP 1,2 (including Nokia 6670 and 7610): problems with updating the Profile fixed.
8. Don’t try to login any more if the logout call fails.
9. Fixed file transfers for HTTP version
10. User’s mood is now displayed properly for HTC phones
11. Screen is now updated properly if contact’s mood or presence changes while the contact’s chat screen is open.
12. HTC: Settings are now saved properly in the record store.
13. Invites cannot be moved to a group any more.
14. Up to 5 icons can now be shown in the heading

The following bugs were fixed:

1. Fixed connection problem for Samsung E860 / E530 / X820 users.
2. Mute sound menu item (in Alerts screen) now set to the saved
   mute sound state instead of being always disabled.
3. The mute sound menu option is now set to the correct (saved) value MXit
   starts up.
4. When a file has finished downloading focus returns to the screen that was active when the downloading started.

This shows a progress indicator to give feedback to the user on how long a file transfer operation should take to complete.

All phones will have the ability to see the mood of a contact change though since it is reported in the conversation screen (e.g. alias is now happy).

Some shortcut keys have been added so that certain operations can be perfomed faster

• # + # – toggle sound
• # + 1 – toggle show offline contacts
• # + 2 – jump to presence screen (back returns to previous screen)

1. Autoaway is set to true (on) by default.
2. Emoticons can now be selected using the stylus on phone’s that use a stylus (stick thing).

A number of bugs have also been fixed:

• Motorola V300: Adding more than one contact causes application error.
• Nokia N-Gage: Alert tones stop working.
• Incorrect heading shown in Menu->Contacts screen when entering for the first time.
• Text with tabs not formatted correctly (a tab is now replaced with a single space).
• Disappearing group heading when ‘Hide offline contacts’ is enabled.
• Nokia Series 40 Ed 3: Menu scroll bar not positioned correctly, which caused the bottom part of the text to be cut off in the contacts screen.

It is mostly a bugfix release, but does have a couple of new features as well, so we are calling it 5.1 (instead of 5.0.x)

The following bug has been fixed:

1. Fixed the problem experienced by Samsung Z540/Z400 users, namely that messages are removed too quickly including newly arrived messages. This had the effect the messages were lost.
