MXit V5.4.1 is out today!

A new version (5.4.1) of the MXit mobile client has been released.

This is a bugfix release that does not add new functionality.

The following bugs have been fixed:

1. File send (upload) speed has been improved significantly.
2. Minimum PIN length when registering has been changed to 7 digits.
3. The Alerts profiles have been extended so that markup and vibes can be enabled / disable on a per profile case. This would allow people to protect themselves from getting spammed with vibes in e.g. chatrooms by for example putting all the chatrooms in a group, disabling vibes and markup for a specific profile (e.g. silent), and assigning that profile to the group
4. Popup menu now displays items correctly in all cases (previously it was sometimes incorrectly scrolled down when shown for the first time)
5. Indonesian language support has been added.
6. The default progress icon has been updated a bit (has MXit text inside)
7. Sony Ericsson K700 and Motorola V360, V3 and V3i versions have been updated so that they use less memory. The default skin that is used for those version has also been simplified.
8. Fixed the issue with custom emoticon packs going missing (when deleting pack and adding new one)
9. Voice recorder for Nokia 6233 (and other Series 40 3rd Ed SP1 & SP2 phones now works correctly)
10. Samsung U700: Pressing left arrow in Name field of save messages screen does not freeze app anymore.
11. Skins with names that are longer than 23 characters can now be activated (again).
12. Camera is now disabled for Nokia E60 (since E60 does not have camera support)
13. Stylus support is now enabled for all v5.4 handsets
14. Save messages (to gallery) feature has been improved: big messages are now saved correctly and color markup (#RRGGBB) is not saved unnecessarily anymore.

Issued by: MXit

Instant messaging service MXit will offer South Africans an opportunity to chat directly with members of MTV European Awards favourite Freshlyground, in two 45 minute sessions on Tuesday 30th October at 4pm.

Last month local band Freshlyground released their latest album Ma’Cheri featuring their single “Potbelly” as a chart topper on 5FM’s World Chart show hosted by Nicole Fox.

“We will be chatting about our inspiration for Ma’Cheri and Potbelly’s lyrics ‘fat thighs, flabby arms and pot belly’ – something everyone is curious about!” says Zolani Mahola, Freshlyground’s lead vocalist. “We will also chat about our upcoming nationwide tour due to start on the 2nd of November in Cape Town and, on a more serious side, our experience with social networking online.”

“Celebrity Chat is a fun way for fans to get in touch directly with their favourite stars while at the same time experience the need to chat safely online. Chat room usage and instant messaging (IM) is a popular means for people to meet and stay in touch. With this there is a need to maintain responsible use: not disclose your personal details, avoid profanity and not meet online contacts in real life. We believe Freshlyground would be best to chat about this, based on their personal experience using messaging as a way to stay in touch”, says Paul Stemmet, general manager of MXit Lifestyle.

Now five years old Freshlyground is a seven member band of Mozambican, Zimbabwean and South African origins, with music that is a fusion of African flavour and classical percussion. Not defined by one genre, Freshlyground’s music combines elements of Folk, Afropop, Jazz and Indie Rock. Critics have described Freshlyground as “passionate” and “red hot” with “an honesty and depth in their lyrics”.

“Music and technology go hand-in-hand today and most youths see services such as MXit as their social lifeblood, so it’s a fantastic and direct route to our fans”, says Mahola.

Based on MXit’s need to offer their 5,3 million users a safer and moderated chat facility, Dynamic Chat Zones were introduced earlier this year. “Even with these features there remains a need to keep our safety messages fresh and MXit users are constantly reminded to never share personal information and to not meet online friends in real life”, says Stemmet.

This fourth Celebrity Chat session coincides with the recent addition of three new languages available on MXit – Xhosa, isiZulu and Afrikaans. Between the band members Zolani, Simon, Peter, Kyla, “Gugs”, Josh and Aron all the main local languages are all covered and users can chat in their language of choice.

To join the Freshlyground chat download the latest version of MXit by visiting www.mxit.co.za/wap. Follow the step-by-step registration guide and add ‘celebritychat’ as a contact from Tradepost and look out for the ‘Freshlyground Chat room’.

MXit is available in many languages since Version 5.2!

Afrikaans – South African language.

German (Dutch/Deutsch)

English

Spanish (Español)

French (Français)

Portuguese (Português, Brazilian and European)

Xhosa (isiXhosa) – South African african language

Zulu (isiZulu) – South African african language

This will help if someone isn’t familiar with English language words on their mobile and are struggling to get MXit to chat with!
Afrikaans, Zulu and Xhosa are three other official languages spoken in South Africa, the country of creation of MXit.

I agree with the statements that the market for Xhosa and Zulu speakers is quite big in South Africa, as I experience a lot of feedback on my mobile wap site (wap.defza.com) from native South African language speakers! And it’s quite an exciting new market.

Check out this for a quick language primer
At a time when MXit has reached 5.4 million users, there’s still much more potential left in the company from South Africa. At a solid 10-12K new registrations per day.

Visit www.mxit.com/wap to get MXit in your language now!

Came across this poem about online chatting…

woke today and watched the sun rise, chatted to a guy but never saw his eyes
strangest thing what life has become, mxit’s controlling it in some
bonded now across valleys and oceans, mxit has bound us by only emotions
not a smile do we see or a hand do we touch, and yet of each we learn so much
has life become such that we need not have touch
we need not hear voices or genuine laughter, what is it actually we are all after
we treasure the friends we have not yet met,and the ones around us we seem to forget
we mxit from morning into the night, and never stop to wonder is mxit so right

- by luvkitten

It says: use it wisely, and don’t forget your real friends!

Some MXit Facts

About nine million log-ons per day.

Over 200 million messages sent per day.

Between eight and 12 thousand new registrations per day.

* Swist Group Technologies (Pty) Ltd was formed in 1995 and is a major shareholder of MXit Lifestyle.
* In April 2004, the business unit of MXit Lifestyle (formerly Clockspeed Mobile) was separated from Swist Group to form a new company.
* Naspers acquired a 30% stake in MXit in January 2007.

MXit V5.2 is to be released soon (3rd Quarter of 2007).

Try it out first if you are a Freestyler subscriber on MXit (See the Tradepost contact on MXit), you will be notified of the new release before everyone else.
Two weeks earlier than everyone else.
Currently only R2.50 per month for those extra premium services! Nothing compared to some R5 per day scams for ringtones etc that one sees advertized.

Why get Freestyler subscription on MXit?
You can save, send and receive your messages, greetings cards and pictures at no additional cost (beyond operator data costs).

On Thursday, August 16 2007 it will be available to Freestylers first to test out!

New features in 5.2?

Major Features

International languages – support for more alphabets/characters (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and German)

Secure/encrypted messages/chat – A new “send encrypted” option.

<strike>

Voice Messaging/Chat (VOIP) – almost like “push-to-talk”.

</strike> – Not yet!

Meet Your Gallery – V5.2 allows ALL users to make use of the Gallery. (Previously exclusive to Freestylers)
Save conversations, files, Skinz and more to your personal Gallery.
25 items at a max size of 150kb.

Play Audio Files – on supported phones.

Broadcast (Group Messaging) – V5.2 allows you to broadcast a message to 10 contacts in a Group for FREE. (Previously exclusive to Freestylers)

- The MXit website (mxit.com) is already translated to some other languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, German and Brazilian).

- AE128 content encryption will shortly be standardised on the MXit system (with a view, MXit says, toward creating a foundation for financial transactions).

<strike>- The voice/voip: It’s effectively push-to-talk or ‘quasi push to talk’ as MXit describes it.</strike> – Not yet, V6 probably~
V5.2 is just a minor’ish update.

Minor Fixes/Additions

Smooth Scrolling – Hold in up and down, no need to press up/down repeatedly.

Set your autoaway time. ( 1,2,5,10, or 20 minutes)

Under settings – login: You can change the connection type: auto/http/socket: half duplex/socket: full-duplex. This is for phones that might have problems connecting.

A “3 soft button mode” – if you want to use a third shortcut button at the MXit bottom bar. (“Options” and “Back” are “soft keys” when you are talking to a contact.) Having three will give you “Write” as a softkey, for quicker access. As well as other options on other screens in MXit.

Presence State & Mood In Conversation Screen

Connectivity Improved

Max Message Size Changed to 1000 bytes/characters

Improvements for some phones:

i-Mate / HTC phones do not have much extra java APIs (no file access, no sending of SMS, no access to the camera from within Java), so the extra feature will be the ability to download skins.

Read more below…

I managed to find the MXit V5.2 beta before it was released, but I’m not a person to break trust, so don’t even ask You will get it soon!

Official changelist
